Course
Video Game Development History
An active history and exploration course on how video games were built, how the medium changed, and why design eras mattered.
This course
- Students use self-paced work to study major eras, platforms, tools, genres, and design shifts
- Weekly live online events build on that work with discussion, historical examples, emulator play or testing when appropriate, and design analysis
- Activities may include looking at how games work, exploring assets, trying small modifications, and comparing design choices
- The course gives context for later software, game development, or digital media work
What families should know
- This course centers on history, analysis, and exploration rather than full-scale game programming
- Students may compare genres, mechanics, hardware limits, and development approaches across time
- No prior coding or game design experience is required unless a future session says otherwise
- It pairs naturally with later software, programming, or interactive media coursework
